Liverpool One and Dream sculpture shortlisted for top design award
Three Merseyside building projects have made the international shortlist for a prestigious design award.
The Liverpool One shopping complex, the John Lewis pedestrian bridge and the Dream sculpture, in St Helens, are all up for a Civic Trust award, set up to recognise schemes which make an outstanding contribution to their environment.
A total of six north-west projects are shortlisted.
Liverpool One estates director Chris Bliss said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for a Civic Trust award, which recognises not only the best in architecture, design and planning but also schemes which were judged to have made a positive contribution to their community.
“2009 was an amazing year for acknowledging the work which went into Liverpool One.
“As we gear up for our third year in Liverpool, we are very proud of what we have achieved so far, and remain committed to our contribution to the city.”
The £1.9m Dream sculpture, by world-renowned artist Jaume Plensa, was installed on the former Sutton Manor colliery, in St Helens, next to the M62.
The public artwork, a 20m elongated face of a young girl, was created with the help of former miners and reflects both the rich heritage of the mining community and the regeneration of the borough.
Cllr Richard Ferry, St Helens council’s executive member for urban regeneration, said: “This is another great accolade for Dream and highlights the growing acclaim this landmark sculpture is receiving
“Such awards generate great interest in public art and focuses on St Helens as a progressive location for regeneration, encouraging growth in our tourism and business sectors.
“It is a great testament to the hard work, determination and creativity of the people and communities involved in the realisation of Dream.”
The Civic Trust awards will be presented by George Clarke, architect and presenter of Channel 4’s The Home Show, while the keynote speech will be made by Chris Wilkinson, founder of Wilkinson Eyre Architects.
Among the successful entrants from the North-West last year were the Echo Arena and BT Convention Centre.
The ceremony takes place at St George’s Hall on March 12.
