Stress at work – the FACTS

According to the CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development), stress is now the number one cause of long-term sickness absence at work with increasing job security and mounting workloads being cited as key factors.

Stress is costly, especially for smaller businesses. Each case of stress related ill health leads to an average of 30 days off work. (HSE)

That’s why we’re here. There are a number of ways in which organisations can help combat stress at work and start to bring these figures down. The De-Stress Show is dedicated to promoting the use of therapies in the work place to reduce stress-related illness and ultimately improve productivity within a company.

Why tackle Stress at Work?

Government statistics show that by tackling workplace stress:

•You can significantly improve working life for 20% of your staff, which subsequently results in reduced absenteeism and lower staff turnover.

•For every £1 you invest in staff well-being, there’s a return of £3 in improved efficiency and productivity.

The CIPD Absence Management Survey 2010 shows that despite pressure to cut costs, 22% of organisations increased spend on employee well-being, with only 9% showing a reduction. Those who increased spending in 2010 indicated they were likely to increase their well-being spend further in 2011. This statistic alone indicates that a positive result was achieved from increasing the focus on employee well-being and should be part of every organisations CSR ethos.

Causes of work related stress

From working practices, pressure and environmental factors to interpersonal factors, role ambiguity and recognition, there are many causes of work related stress. And it’s not always simply internal factors at the source, employees can bring outside stress to work. Regardless, there is an economical cost of work related stress and The De-Stress Show aims to help organisations identify and tackle the issues and help bring about a more productive workforce.
