Enterprise and Education
On the 29th March 2011 Liverpool was named the the 2012 host city of the prestigious Global Entrepreneurship Congress, run by the US-based Kauffman Foundation.
The bid, written by Liverpool Vision, the city’s economic development company, whose executive underwent a competitive interview, beat off strong competition from the United Arab Emirates, Chile and Denmark.
Liverpool now becomes the first UK and European city to hold an event which attracts hundreds of the world’s leading entrepreneurs, thought leaders and economists from more than 100 countries.
Previous host cities are Kansas City in 2008, Dubai in 2009 and Shanghai, the host city for this year’s Congress.
Liverpool Vision also actively supports the ‘Enterprise Olympics’ programme in Liverpool’s secondary schools. The ‘Olympics’ provides opportunities for a team of students from each of the participating schools to develop enterprise proposals, with finalists attending a residential master class, supported by local entrepreneurs. They also win cash and equipment for their school, and represent the city at regional and national levels.
We’re also supporting the development of two Enterprise Academy Hubs located in New Heys Business & Enterprise College and the North Liverpool Academy. The focus of the Enterprise Academy is to stimulate active engagement with students in the 14-19 age groups and to introduce them to the idea of developing and building their own businesses. A cohort of students is then provided with an opportunity to test their enterprise ideas and be supported to achieve a qualification in Entrepreneurship.
