Welcome to Liverpool – city’s newest students enjoy red carpet reception
• Liverpool Vision launches It’s Liverpool Instagram Competition
More than 800 of the city’s newest academic arrivals were given a grand civic introduction at the first ever Liverpool International Student Welcome, organised by Liverpool Vision. Seventy Five Per Cent of the students originate from China.
The students from the University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University and Liverpool Hope University gatherd in St George’s Hall on Tuesday, October 30 for a red carpet reception and to hear what they can expect to discover in their city of choice.
Max Steinberg, chief executive of Liverpool Vision, guided the students through the city’s remarkable transformation over the last decade. They also heared from Deputy Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Cllr Gary Millar; Chris Arnold, founder and president of Smaller Earth which runs Your Big Year and World Merit; and Cllr Nick Small, cabinet member for employment, enterprise and skills.
The evening concluded with a performance from MOBO nominee, Liverpool’s Esco Williams and a prize draw with items donated by Everton and Liverpool Football Clubs and STA travel.
Liverpool is home to more than 50,000 students from more than 120 countries, many of whom choose to stay in the city at the end of their studies to start their careers.
Mr Steinberg said: “We are delighted that so many people are continuing to choose to study in Liverpool and it is a reflection of what a vibrant and dynamic city we are.
“I know that Liverpool’s universities are very proud of their international students and graduates and many have gone on to occupy senior positions in business and public life both within the UK and internationally.
“We need to roll the red carpet out for our newest ‘citizens’ because they also have the potential to be our newest ambassadors who will tell the world how great Liverpool is.”
The students will also be encouraged to take part in an It’s Liverpool Instagram Competition by capturing Liverpool’s people, places and passions, which will be launched at the event.
