Superport to bring jobs

A boom in private-sector jobs will dwarf the loss of public-sector posts under ambitious plans to make the Mersey docks the “super port” of theNorth, MPs were told yesterday.
Esther McVey, the Wirral West MP, said the Port of Liverpool was entering into “a critical phase of its history, a once in a generation opportunityto secure its economic growth and future”.
And she predicted the huge rewards in terms of new jobs would fulfil the government’s pledge to “rebalance the economy” away from a dominant South East.
During a Commons debate Ms McVey said that success was badly needed, amid projections that the Liverpool ‘city region’ would shed 16,000 public-sector jobs, because of the spending squeeze.
But she said: “SuperPort projects could transform the Liverpool city region economy, creating 21,000 new jobs by 2020 and nearly 30,000 by2030.
She said: “I hope that, by investing into Liverpool Port and promoting economic growth, we can once again bring greatness back to the city, to make it a leading hub for shipping and manufacturing once again.
“Surely the expansion of Liverpool city region, and other similar cities, to capitalise on natural assets enabling them to re-balance their economy, has to be a must for this government?”
