Opportunities for region to become trading hub for China, says city’s Chinese Business Champion Dr Lee
Liverpool's Chinese Business Champion believes the city region could become a major trade and manufacturing hub for Chinese businesses, as it builds on the relationships and profile generated following its presence at the Shanghai World Expo.
The claim by Dr Lee Kai Hung came on the eve of his visit to China to meet investors and manufacturing companies who are embracing the spirit of the country’s “Go Out” economic policy.
Dr Lee and Cllr Nick Small, cabinet member for employment, enterprise and skills, visited Dr Lee’s home city of Nanning, in October, to explore more commercial opportunities, and Dr Lee said: “Following our very successful visit to China, there is a growing realisation there about Liverpool’s extremely strong offer as an investment and manufacturing centre.
“Increasingly, Chinese manufacturers are moving production closer to international markets and have begun to set up large-scale operations in the USA. They are looking to benefit from Western advanced manufacturing skills, as well as expertise in product design and brand development.
“This presents a massive opportunity for Liverpool.”
He believes Liverpool’s port and its profile in China could give the city a strong competitive edge over other investment destinations. The port’s development of a post- Panamax facility will re-establish the city as a major gateway for Chinese trade.
But he sees this as only one part of a potentially transformational economic relationship: “We need to understand the dynamics of the ‘Go Out’ philosophy, and what is guiding Chinese businesses when they make investment decisions.
“Goods finished or made in the West are more attractive to Chinese consumers. Liverpool is a gateway to Western markets, but also a departure point back to Asian markets. Our offer is exceptional.”
