Lord Heseltine meets with Merseyside’s political and business elite

Lord Heseltine met with Merseyside council leaders and business figures yesterday as part of his fact-finding mission about how the region’s economy is faring.

The former President of the Board of Trade under John Major spent two hours meeting with members of Merseyside’s Local Enterprise Partnership at Liverpool Town Hall.

As well as fielding questions from the members, Lord Heseltine – who was pivotal in the regeneration of parts of the city after the Toxteth riots – sat in on their committee meeting.

The 76-year-old multi-millionaire, estimated to have a fortune of around £240m, was commissioned by Prime Minister David Cameron to work with Liverpool-born former Tesco chief executive Sir Terry Leahy to draw up a report on how the LEP is working and its strategy for economic growth.

LEPs are a brainchild of the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition and will take responsibility for driving regeneration and development following the abolition of the North West Development Agency.

It is part of the Government’s bid to relax Westminster and Whitehall’s grip on the regions.

Max Steinberg, chief executive of regeneration body Liverpool Vision, said the LEP was progressing well, adding: “The city-region has now reached the maturity to play to its strengths.”
