Liverpool's Mathew Street Festival to feature alcohol-free family zone for first time

Families will be able to enjoy an alcohol-free zone at this year’s Mathew Street Festival.

For the first time in the 20 year history of the music festival, a free child-friendly area will be located on the site of St John’s Gardens.

The area, which will be known as Strawberry Fields, after the children’s home where John Lennon enjoyed garden parties as a youngster, will be open on both days of the event – August 26 and 27 – from 12 noon to 5pm.

In keeping with its name it will evoke the atmosphere of a traditional garden party.

The park will have street theatre, craft workshops, face and body painting, holistic therapies, drumming workshops, giant Beatles puppets, healthy refreshment stalls and picnic areas.

And there will be a strawberry theme to all the decorations.

The special area has been funded by Liverpool Primary Care Trust.
