Liverpool shows 2012 "isn't just about London"
A free festival at Liverpool's Echo Arena will offer tasters of Olympic sport and the chance to meet the city's leading athletes.
On Sunday (22 January), sporting personalities from Liverpool, including Olympic bronze medalists Steve Parry and Steve Smith and world gymnastics champion Beth Tweddle, will offer tips on fitness, while visitors can try out volleyball, karate, fencing, judo and handball.
Five hundred young people from Liverpool’s Music Support Service will sing in a ceremony to open the event, which was organised by Liverpool City Council in partnership with Liverpool Primary Care Trust and the Echo Arena, part of ACC Liverpool.
John Moore, sport and account manager for the Echo Arena said: "To welcome Olympians and high-profile sporting heroes to the Echo Arena in this Olympics year is a fantastic coup for us."
He added: "This event helps to send out our message that 2012 isn’t just about London. There are a number of ways other cities and venues can get involved in the biggest sporting event of the century so far."
