Liverpool Pier Head 3D Son et Lumiere event brings international artists to River Mersey

One of the masterminds behind the 3D Son et Lumiere show at the Pier Head this weekend said spectators could look forward to a stunning audio-visual display.

The projection has been put together by the Czech Republic-based artists The Macula, who have already won international acclaim for productions in their native Prague and in Dubai, but have never worked in the UK before.

They have devised two shows for the free On the Waterfront weekend, which starts tomorrow.

To celebrate the centenary of the Liver Building and the opening of the new Museum of Liverpool the artists have put together an audio-visual projection for each building.

They use a technique called video mapping - this involves making the architecture of the building an integral part of the display, rather than a mere backdrop.

Martin Posta, who works for The Macula, said: “The Liverpool challenge is one of the most important events for The Macula team in 2011. The On The Waterfront event should be the place where modern architectural mapping meets Liverpool’s history and its contemporaneousness. In our conception, the creative approach to the projection should come from the historical differences of the buildings.

“The Royal Liver Building should represent the old, traditional aspect of Liverpool’s history, drawing inspiration from the uniqueness of the architecture and depicting the city’s 800-year-history on the surface of the building.Š At the same time we want to reflect its significance as a symbol of the wealth during the late 19th century and early 20th century.”

Mr Posta said the 3D projection for the Museum of Liverpool building would be more abstract and minimalistic, to reflect its status as the city’s newest building, and to make a contrast with the Liver Building.

The event will be kicked off by a musical performance each evening.Š On Friday, blues singer Connie Lush will take to the stage, on Saturday the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a Beatles-themed concert conducted by Carl Davis, while local band 6ix Toys will entertain the crowds on Sunday.

Throughout each evening, giant, beautifully illuminated lanterns representing key points in the city’s history will be on display at the Pier Head, and there will be some illuminated fish swimming in the canal.

The Museum of Liverpool’s opening hours will be extended to 10pm on Friday and Saturday, with the On the Waterfront events starting at around 8.30pm.
