Liverpool actor David Morrissey launches his Creative Arts Schools Trust charity

Actor David Morrissey spoke of his determination to take drama to the most disadvantaged children in the world as he introduced his charity the Creative Arts Schools Trust (CAST).

The Kensington-born Macbeth star said yesterday that the project was partly inspired by the Everyman Youth Theatre which transformed his own education.

He told the Daily Post: “My education – the main fault of which was me and my application – wasn’t a very academic education.

“My real education came through drama, putting on shows, telling stories, it was much more a way of learning that was active. I really responded to that and still do.

“I’m a great believer that you can use drama to reach children that are struggling in other ways.

“That’s very important because a lot of Middle Eastern education is delivered by rote and that’s very much how a lot of people learnt in the old days, but our education system has changed a lot and it’s important that we take that over there too.”

The actor set up CAST after a visit to Lebanon in 2009, launching the charity with a week-long workshop for children there.

“When I was approached I thought they had got the wrong guy at first,” he admitted.

“I had never done anything like this before.”
