• Enterprise celebrated in lead up to Global Entrepreneurship Congress 2012

Liverpool was the focus for this year’s Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW), November 14-21 2011 as the city prepares to be the first ever European host of the Global Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC), in March 2012.

Previous GEC host cities are Kansas City in 2009, Dubai in 2010 and Shanghai in 2011.

A series of events took place across the City Region during the week encouraging entrepreneurs, business leaders and business support organisations across the city to outline their support for budding entrepreneurs and early stage start-ups, in order to boost the economy.

Highlights included a (Downtown Liverpool In Business/Liverpool Vision) conference featuring keynote speeches from Shadow Secretary to the Treasury, Rachel Reeves MP and Redrow Chairman Steve Morgan.

Liverpool’s Great Enterprise Challenge, for which schools have been given £100 investment from Liverpool city council to develop a business idea and win a trip to Washington DC, also reached its second stage with an event at Liverpool Football Club.

Max Steinberg, Chief Executive of Liverpool Vision, said GEW provides the perfect build up to the GEC 2012 when 3000 delegates from more than 120 countries will be in the city.

“Our ambition is to make Liverpool the enterprise hub for the UK and we want to create the conditions in which innovators and entrepreneurs can thrive and that has never been more important than now.

“Global Entrepreneurship Week and the Congress in Liverpool next year are key milestones to help us achieve these goals while learning new lessons on how we can best stimulate and grow our economy.

“We have developed a compelling programme of activity during GEW which is a real indication of how the public and private sectors are uniting in the city to accelerate on-going efforts to create a dynamic enterprise driven culture.

“I believe these events, will inspire and encourage existing business and those wanting to unleash their ideas and start their own ventures.”

Those interested in lending their support to small businesses can add their offers and advice to an online map at www.gew.org.uk. Likewise, those wishing to start or grow a business can use the map to ask for help and practical support. The map is populated via tweets including the #GEWask or #GEWoffer hash tags plus a #location hash tag e.g. #liverpool

Alternatively ‘asks’ and ‘offers’ can be emailed to getinvolved@gew.org.uk or an online form can be completed. Put Liverpool on the map, and join a national conversation.

This year the week was hosted in the UK by Youth Business International, and their Chief Executive Andrew Devenport said: “The Global Entrepreneurship Week map is a great way in which we can find out more about what aspiring entrepreneurs need and what support is available for start-ups in Liverpool.

“I hope to see the conversation build up further, with entrepreneurs giving really specific suggestions on what help they need and support organisations responding with concrete offers, like being willing to mentor a business in their sector or holding a free workshop.”
