Bid to create new university to support development of Liverpool SuperPort

Employers have backed a bid to establish a new university in Liverpool to develop “SuperPort” skills.

Mersey Docks owner Peel Holdings, engineer Arup, construction firm Balfour Beatty and transport authority Merseytravel support the concept of a University Technical College for Environmental Technologies and SuperPort Academy.

The bid has been launched by Liverpool Community College, with the support of the city council and Liverpool John Moores University (JMU).

With Government approval, the facility would be built on land at the Eldonian Village, in Vauxhall.

More than 35,000 jobs are expected to be created by 2020 in careers such as logistics, low-carbon technologies and engineering, as Liverpool benefits from a new Panamax terminal which will be able to handle bigger vessels.

Cllr Nick Small said: ‘The new jobs created require the development of new skills and collaboration between educational providers and the private sector.

“The University Technical College (UTC) will be an innovative response from Liverpool Community College and Liverpool JMU to meet private sector demand.”

Community College principal Elaine Bowker said: “This bid for UTC status is essential for the future development of the Liverpool economy.

“A successful UTC will ensure we deliver the right skills, at the right time and at the right level.”
