Liverpool can develop business and jobs as 'green capital of Europe' says new report

LIVERPOOL can establish itself as the “green capital of Europe”, a new report claims today.

However, “Building the Low Carbon Economy on Merseyside” by Peter North, at the University of Liverpool, warns that residents in the city’s socially excluded communities need to gain the necessary skills to exploit any potential benefits.

The survey has been released by Low Carbon Liverpool, a joint venture between the university and environmental charity Groundwork Merseyside. It says the city is well placed to benefit from low-carbon opportunities such as energy production in the Irish Sea and the Mersey, the Toxteth Smart Grid which aims to cut energy use and enable households to generate their own power, and the production of low-carbon cars at Jaguar Land Rover and Vauxhall.

Today’s report also urges city leaders to continue the region’s rebranding, following Capital of Culture, to secure European Green Capital of Culture status.

Business leaders welcomed the survey and Liverpool Chamber of Commerce spokeswoman Maresa Molloy said: “This report demonstrates that moves to meeting low-carbon targets are a business opportunity, not a restriction to growth.”
